What it is

RSS is an abbreviation that has different meanings. The most accepted is Really Simple Syndication. It is an XML based format designed especially for spaces where news changes frequently. The text produced in RSS usually contains the headline of each news item and a link to the page where the complete content is found.

Advantages of RSS

RSS is used to provide notification of information frequently updated to users that are subscribed to the format. The format enables distribution of content without a browser. It is read with software designed to read RSS content (news reader). But a browser can also be used.

How I use it

A program called “news reader” must be installed in order to use RSS. It groups all of the new sources that you subscribe to and lets you review the headlines from one place.

You can find many free news reader on the internet (FeedReader).

Some browsers and mail administrators like Mozilla Firefox, lexplorer 7, Opera, Thunderbird, etc. include them in their program as value added services to the user.

Once you have a news reader installed you only need to subscribe the information sources that interest you.

To do that, you need the web address (URL) of the RSS information source.

Copy the link that appears in URL address field of the browser in the page you want to subscribe to and follow the instructions of the news reader.

Often you will need to add it in the box that appears when you select “Add a new source”.
