Project Overviewx

Since 2012, PROINSO, together with its long‑term local partner PT Surya Energi Indotama, has completed more than 40 MWh of mini‑grid projects across some of the most remote and challenging regions in the world. These initiatives have played a crucial role in expanding access to reliable electricity in underserved communities and improving quality of life.

The latest achievement in this series is the 492 kWp mini‑grid installation on East Sumba Island, Indonesia — a project that earned the 2018 Solar Power Portal “Community Solar Installation of the Year” Award. This distributed‑generation system now supplies power to over 900 households and public facilities, directly transforming daily life for residents who previously lacked consistent access to electricity.

The project was carried out under the Green Prosperity Project of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States bilateral foreign aid agency supporting sustainable development and poverty‑reduction initiatives. Through this collaboration, the East Sumba installation has become a model for community‑focused renewable energy deployment, demonstrating how solar mini‑grids can provide long‑term social, economic and environmental benefits in remote areas.
